Examination for IAS is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which is a Constitutional body. To become as IAS Officer, one needs to clear the Civil Service Examination coducted by UPSC.
The Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC has following stages:
1. Preliminary Examination: All eligible candidates can apply for the preliminary exam
2. Main Examination: Only those candidates who cleared the prelim exam are allowed for main exam
3. Personality Test (or Interview): Only those candidates who have cleared the main exam are invited for Personality Test.
4. Final Result: Only those candidates securing highest marks (mains + personality test) are admitted to various post according to post preference given and availability of seats.
